THE WHEEL OF LIFE

LINBURY PRIZE SHOWCASE

LYTTELTON LOUNGE, NATIONAL THEATRE

“THE WHEEL OF LIFE” TAKES DIRECT INSPIRATION FROM AN 18TH CENTURY BYZANTINE STYLE PAINTING. IT DEPICTS IN ITS CENTER A WHEEL WITH A FIGURE ASCENDING AND GROWING FROM YOUNG CHILD TO ADULTHOOD AND DEATH. IN THE ORIGINAL IMAGE A DEPICTION OF THE CHRISTIAN GOD SITS ON A THRONE AT THE TOP OF THE WHEEL WHILST AT THE BOTTOM WE SEE A DEMON LIKE FIGURE. ON THE LEFT AND RIGHT HAND SIDE RESPECTIVELY DAY AND NIGHT ARE PERSONIFIED AND ARE PULLING THE WHEEL LEADING THE OLD PERSON IN THE MOUTH OF THE BEAST.

CYNICISM, DARKNESS, WHERE THE PAGAN MEETS WITH THE ORTHODOX THAT IS WHERE I EXIST. I AIM FOR THE VIEWER TO REGARD THIS PIECE OF SET AS SOMETHING THAT THEY THEMSELVES CAN “SET”. AS A PIECE OF SCENERY THAT PERFORMS IN A THEATER WITHOUT ACTUAL PERFORMERS, MAYBE THE AUDIENCE’S IMAGINATION WILL SEE THIS IN A MAGICAL BALLET, IN A DRAMATIC OPERA OR IN WINDOW DISPLAY, REGARDLESS THE WHEEL OF LIFE KEEPS SPINNING.
